From the beginning, The Salvation Army has expanded its capacity throughout the United States to provide mass feeding, personal care items, counseling and referrals for social services for victims of weather related and other disasters.
The Salvation Army staff and volunteers are often the first on the scene and the last to depart. This dedication honors a century-old commitment to serve those in need, at the time of need, and at the place of need. The red shield continues to be a beacon of compassion of immediate aid, psychological support, and spiritual counsel to people whose lives have been disrupted or shattered by forces beyond their control.
The Tallahassee Salvation Army disaster teams assisted in relief efforts during Hurricane Katrina and Rita within Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas in 2005 and in 2006 and 2008 tornado relief in Sumner, Dickson, Cheatham, Macon, Williamson and Robertson Counties.
Trained volunteer disaster teams led by Salvation Army staff are available to serve locally and nationwide. From its inception, The Salvation Army has relied heavily on volunteers who support its programs. Often referred to as “the army behind The Army,” volunteers play a crucial role in response efforts during a disaster by positively impacting the lives of those involved. The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services is always looking for individuals ready to make a significant contribution through supporting communities, uplifting families or serving front line responders in the wake of a crisis.
As a volunteer you will be of priceless value to your community and The Salvation Army. We appreciate our volunteers and recognize their strengths and achievements. Individuals interested in volunteering may go to “Our Disaster Services” found under the About Tab to learn more about the core basic services found in most Salvation Army disaster services programs, and areas where you may volunteer to serve. We need volunteers. If you or someone you know would like to give back to your community and have been looking for a way…this is it!
