Salvation Army celebrates ‘Christmas in July’ at West Michigan Whitecaps Game
When most people think of Christmas, they think of Salvation Army bells and snow, but things were a little different July 31st in Kent County! With a cool breeze and temps in the 70’s, the West Michigan Whitecaps baseball team partnered with The Salvation Army in Kent County for Christmas in July.
Before the game, Whitecaps fans were greeted by the sounds of The Salvation Army Brass Band as they entered LMCU Ballpark. The first 1,000 fans through the gates also received a special Whitecaps ornament.
To get the game started, Major Tim Meyer of The Salvation Army in Kent County threw the first pitch. In between innings, he was interviewed in the Gordon Food Service broadcast booth by the voice of the Whitecaps Dan Hasty.
Members of the Grand Rapids Echelon society staffed the Salvation Army information table, and helped fans learn more about programs to help those in need, and volunteer opportunities.
The event would not have been possible without the help of Salvation Army donors including Platinum sponsor Dr. Sally and Larry Robson, and Bronze Sponsors, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Rehmann and Dr. Ray and Phylliss Vander Weele. Event proceeds will go to help support Salvation Army programs. Next up is the 3rd Annual Red Shield Sporting Clays Event September 26 at the Kent County Conservation League.
