Understanding Homelessness in Broward County

The 2024 Point-in-Time Count reveals a significant challenge within our community: 2,487 individuals in Broward County are currently experiencing homelessness.  This stark figure underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

Homelessness is a complex issue, often stemming from a combination of interconnected factors. In Broward County, the primary drivers include:

  • Lack of Affordable Housing: A critical shortage of housing options that residents can afford.
  • Economic Instability: Difficulties securing stable employment or earning a living wage (Unemployment or Underemployment).
  • Health Crises: Unexpected medical issues or chronic conditions leading to financial strain and housing loss.
  • Domestic Violence: Fleeing abusive situations often leaves individuals and families without safe shelter.
  • Addiction Disorders: Substance use challenges can lead to instability and homelessness.
  • Mental Illness: Lack of access to mental healthcare and support systems can be a major contributing factor.

Our Housing & Shelter Solutions

At The Salvation Army of Broward County, we offer a range of housing and shelter solutions designed to meet diverse needs and empower individuals and families on their journey to stability.

Transitional Housing for Families: Plymouth Colony

Plymouth Colony provides a supportive bridge to independence for homeless families with children. We offer more than just a place to stay; we provide comprehensive services including case management, childcare assistance, transportation, essential life skills training, food support, and other vital resources.

Our program is structured in two levels to best meet families where they are:

  • Level 1 (Broward Boulevard Campus): Designed for families requiring more intensive support and case management as they begin their journey.
  • Level 2: caters to families who have achieved initial milestones like securing employment and childcare, demonstrating a higher level of independence and readiness for the next steps.

The Core of Plymouth Colony: Each family is partnered with a dedicated case manager. Together, they develop a personalized plan to address the root causes of their homelessness and build the skills necessary for long-term self-sufficiency. Our ultimate goal is to equip families with the tools and resources to secure and maintain stable, independent housing, preventing future homelessness.

Essential Life Skills Development Includes:

  • Parenting Skills
  • Financial Management & Credit Counseling
  • Spiritual Development (optional)
  • First-Time Homeownership Guidance
  • Career Development & Job Readiness
  • Substance Abuse Relapse Prevention
  • Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention

Transitional Housing for Single Individuals

Our Transitional Housing for Single Individuals offers a structured path to stability, mirroring the supportive framework of our family program. Participants engage in case management and life skills training tailored to their unique circumstances. Key differences include dormitory-style living arrangements with shared common bathroom areas, and program lengths adjusted to individual needs and progress.

Open Door Shelter: Immediate, Low-Barrier Access

The Salvation Army’s Open Door Project serves as a crucial "low-demand" (low-barrier) shelter for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, often those living on our streets with the most acute needs. This program prioritizes immediate safety and basic necessities, offering:

  • A safe place to sleep
  • A nutritious meal
  • Shower facilities

Unlike traditional shelters, Open Door operates with minimal restrictions and requirements, making it accessible to those who might otherwise avoid seeking help. This unique program provides 35 beds nightly, filled on a first-come, first-served basis, ensuring that unsheltered individuals can easily access refuge and a moment of respite.

Rapid Re-Housing for Individuals: A Swift Path to Stability

Our Rapid Re-Housing program is designed to swiftly connect individuals experiencing homelessness with safe, affordable rental units throughout Broward County. We understand that a stable home is the foundation for rebuilding a life.

How We Help:

  • Financial Assistance: The program provides crucial support, including help with initial move-in costs (such as security deposits and first month's rent) and temporary rental subsidies to ease the transition.
  • Dedicated Case Management: Clients are partnered with a dedicated Rapid Re-Housing Case Manager. Together, they develop a personalized housing stabilization plan, identifying and addressing financial and housing barriers.
  • Housing Navigation: The case manager actively assists clients in finding suitable, affordable housing options and liaises with prospective landlords to facilitate successful placements.

Key to Success: To ensure participants can maintain their housing long-term, individuals applying for Rapid Re-Housing assistance must have a demonstrable source of income and/or financial resources that will allow them to sustain their housing once the program's temporary financial support concludes.

Our Goals:  The primary objectives of Rapid Re-Housing are to

  • Significantly reduce the length of time an individual experiences homelessness.
  • Prevent an immediate return to homelessness.
  • Connect individuals with essential community resources that empower them to achieve and maintain long-term housing stability.
