Summer heat waves aren't just uncomfortable, they can be deadly. In the Eastern United States, rising temperatures put our most vulnerable neighbors at serious risk: seniors on fixed incomes choosing between air conditioning and groceries, families in un-air-conditioned apartments, and people experiencing homelessness with no escape from dangerous heat.
This is when communities prove what they're made of. When the thermometer climbs and lives hang in the balance, The Salvation Army's heat relief programs become lifelines, powered by neighbors who understand that keeping someone cool today might save their life.
Extreme heat kills more people in the U.S. each year than storms, floods, or lightning.1 But heat-related deaths are largely preventable when communities come together. Across our Eastern Territory, we're seeing record-breaking temperatures earlier and lasting longer, putting unprecedented strain on families already struggling to make ends meet.
Nationwide, The Salvation Army provided over 9 million nights of shelter and emergency assistance to more than 3 million individuals and families facing crisis.2 Our Eastern Territory centers are part of this critical safety net, opening doors when extreme heat threatens lives.
Cooling Centers and Emergency Shelter
When temperatures soar, we open our doors. Our community centers, corps buildings, and emergency shelters become refuges where anyone can escape dangerous heat. We provide air conditioning, water, basic meals, and a safe place to rest until the heat wave passes.
Utility Assistance Programs
We help families keep their electricity on when cooling costs spike. Emergency financial assistance covers utility bills, prevents shut-offs, and ensures families don't have to choose between staying cool and putting food on the table.
$25 - Can help provide cooling center access, water, and a safe place to rest for one person during a heat emergency
$50 - Can help deliver emergency utility assistance to help keep a family's power on during a heat wave
$100 - Can help fund mobile outreach with hydration supplies for people experiencing homelessness
$250 - Can help sponsor cooling center operations serving vulnerable neighbors during extreme heat
$500 - Can help provide comprehensive relief services in an emergency
The truth is, every dollar helps protect someone from dangerous heat
