LP25: A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
By David Calkins, Holiday Meal Delivery Coordinator (Temp)

Twenty-five years ago on October 17th at 5:04 PM, the Loma Prieta Earthquake struck the Bay Area killing 63 people and injuring thousands more. In remembrance of those who lost their lives in this horrible disaster and to ensure preparedness in the event of another earthquake, the Salvation Army helped organize the LP25 event on Friday, October 17th at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. This event featured many different informational tables and activities where participants could gather information regarding what to do in the event of another earthquake.

Following a moment of silence at 5:04 PM, the Salvation Army hosted a T.O.P (Taste of Preparedness) Chef competition in which five teams competed to make the most creative and delicious meal out of ordinary food items that would likely be found in a typical disaster storage pantry. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of the importance of long-term food storage, as well as show that appetizing meals can really be made exclusively using non-perishable food – even Spam! The teams were given 30 minutes to cook a main dish and a side dish that were then presented to three volunteer judges. The judges then rated the meals based on factors such as quality, creativity, and presentation. In a landslide victory, the San Francisco Police Department proved that not only are they capable of providing comfort to those in danger, but that they are also capable of cooking up some tasty comfort food in the event of a disaster.
