Central Kitchen
The Salvation Army's Central Kitchen is located at 850 Harrison and is one of the largest Salvation Army kitchens in the country. The kitchen is equipped with 16 ovens, 10 stoves, two grills, 80-gallon soup vats and 3,760 cubic feet of freezer and refrigerator space. The Central Kitchen prepares around 9,000 meals every month. In times of disaster response, The Central Kitchen is equipped to cook up to 30,000 meals per 24 hour period. Our kitchen also serves as a job training facility, working with the C.H.E.F.S. Program and the National Council On Aging we are able to provide young and old new skills for the future. The Salvation Army Central Kitchen provides meals for The Salvation Army's Meals Program, Meals That Heal, the Christmas Meal Delivery Program and Catering that Cares.
Our Chef
The Salvation Army is blessed to have Chef Anthony Pardi as Head Chef for the Central Kitchen. As a former executive chef with an extensive resume (including Barbarossa in Redwood City and Spalti Ristorante in Palo Alto), Chef Anthony brings a wealth of experience and new ideas to the kitchen and meal programs that The Salvation Army offers in San Francisco.
Meal Programs
For over 30 years The Salvation Army Meals Program in San Francisco has provided daily, hot, nutritious meals to hundreds of seniors, homebound individuals and those just needing a place to rest their feet and enjoy a little company while re-fueling their body. The meals are distributed Monday through Friday at four congregate meal program locations in San Francisco.
Meals that Heal
This program provides home delivered meals to a growing population of homebound individuals who, due to incapacitating disabilities and illness, are unable to leave their home and shop for food or travel to one of The Salvation Army's many congregate meal sites. The Meals that Heal program offers hot, nutritious meals Monday through Friday and a weekend bag of groceries for those who require it.
This program is much more than a meal. The staff and volunteers provide a valuable human link for the participants to the outside world. For many, it is the only human contact they receive each day and this personal touch builds friendships that last for years. Staff provide visitations, assessing the physical and emotional state of the individual and arrange for further assistance when necessary, which has included this past year, wheelchairs, social services, walkers, refrigerators, clothing, blankets, mattresses and much more. For more information, please call 415-440-HEAL, or contact Eleanor Katopes, Meals that Heal Director.
Christmas Meal Delivery
On Chritsmas Day, The Salvation Army -- with help from hundreds of volunteers -- hand deliver nearly 5,000 meals to seniors and shut-ins who are unable to get out of their homes to receive a meal at congregate meal site.
