The South of Market Corps (SoMa Corps) is part of an international, multi-cultural family of God around the world, known as The Salvation Army.

In 1992, The Salvation Army appointed pastors (officers) to the English-speaking, second-generation congregation that had sprung from The Salvation Army Chinatown Corps. The Asian American Corps was born. The Services and programs of this Corps took place at the Divisional Headquarters of the Salvation Army on Folsom Street.

In 2002 the Yerba Buena Corps joined the Asian American Corps to form the Asian American Yerba Buena Corps (AAYBC) with its current location on Fourth Street in the South of Market district. From then on the AAYBC held worship services in English, Cantonese and Mandarin and has had many ministries serving people ranging from children to seniors.

While proudly remaining prevalently of Chinese descent and cultural background, in November 2009, the Corps took an important step to more effectively reach the community it is in. The Corps changed its name to South of Market (SoMa), reflecting its neighborhood and diverse ministry beyond the Asian American community.
